The Soul Food Rx For A Happy and Lucky New Year!
Hop (hopping John) your way into more luck and abundance this new year.
You may or may not believe in superstitions, but that’s okay.
The following superstition doesn’t require you to chant mantras
or wear certain crystals, no-all that’s required is that you head to
your local grocery store and buy a few items.
The items:
Cornbread
Collard greens (or turnip greens or kale)
white or brown rice
Fish -Cod, Salmon, Flounder (whichever you prefer)
Black-Eyed Peas
Pot Likker (optional) the juice that’s leftover from the greens
And why should you buy these specific items?
Well, if you’re hoping to start off the new year more abundant and prosperous,
then you’ll need the items mentioned above.
That’s right, Southern lore and in many African-American households,
it won’t be a good or (or prosperous) new year if you’re not eating
the foods mentioned earlier.
So, if you’re hoping to start off the new year right and want more
luck and prosperity in the new year, head out to the store right now
and pick up these food items.
And if you need help preparing any of the above-mentioned foods
you can head to Ree Drummond’s site (PioneerWoman.com)
and she’ll give you some info about cooking black-eyed peas
or the New Year’s version of B.E. P”s, called Hoppin John.
Or head to youtube.com and type recipes for collard greens, or black-eyed
peas or Hoppin John in the search bar.
And one last tip:
If you’re interested, you can read or reread our post from last year (2023)
on the foods the Spaniards, Italians, Dutch, and others eat (or drink) to
welcome more luck into their lives on the first of January.
That’s it- here’s wishing you and your family a healthy, wealthy and
incredible new year. 2024.
Good Luck!
