The Comfort Food Rx That Shuts Down Cravings!
Shepherd’s Pie for Sunday’s Dinner!
Do you have a favorite comfort food? For some it’s meatloaf, or peanut butter &
jelly sandwiches, or pizza or a burger with fries (from Five Guys), but for folks
who had limited budgets, their comfort food may have been Sheperd’s Pie.
Sheperd’s pie?
Yes, it’s a combination of beef and potatoes and baked like a pie and if this is
your past or current favorite comfort food, good for you and if you’re still making it,
you may want to swap out the potatoes and replace them with cauliflower.
Cauliflower, why?
It (cauliflower) is a craving crusher and if you’re struggling to control your
cravings, eat more of this white vegetable. Cauliflower contains glucosinolates
and choline) two compounds that dial down hunger, plus boost the liver’s fat-burning
powers. And according to researchers, eat a cup of cauliflower a few times a week,
(raw or cooked) and you can shed up to 2 pounds a week, plus cut your risk of future
weight gain by as much as 80%.
Now, that you’re aware of cauliflower’s ability to help you shed weight and curb your
cravings, here’s a tasty and filling faux Shepherd’s pie recipe that’s made with beef
and cauliflower.
Recipe for Beef “N” Cauliflower Shepherd’s Pie!
Ingredients to include for this week’s grocery list.
1 package of frozen cauliflower florets or clean a fresh cauliflower
and cut off the top to make 2 cups of florets.
2 lbs. of ground beef or 2 lbs. of boneless beef sirloin steak, cut into
1″ pieces
2 tsp. of onion powder
1 tsp. of dried oregano
1/2 tsp. of salt
3/4 tsp. of beef broth
2 Tbs. of Worcestershire
1 Tbs. of flour
1 can of carrots, rinsed and drained or use 2 fresh carrots cut into

Grease a 2 1/2 qt. baking dish. Cook the cauliflower until softened, but still
retains a bit of chewiness. Cook the ground beef along with the onion powder,
oregano and salt in a skillet. (If using sirloin steak, cook it in the skillet just like
the ground beef). Remove the beef, mix the broth, Worcestershire sauce and flour;
add to the skillet. Over medium-high, bring to a boil; cook, stirring, until thickened,
2 mins. Stir in the beef and carrots; cook until heated, for 1 min. Transfer to a baking
dish; top with cauliflower and the cheese. Broil until golden brown-about 4 mins.

Two more tips:
If calories aren’t a concern and you want a heartier and more filling dish
add some cut up potatoes, (boil a cup of potatoes) or use potatoes from a can
(14 or 15 oz. rinsed and drained) and stir them into the beef and carrot mixture.
And the 2nd tip:
If you also enjoy tater tots and buffalo wings, go back and look at our past
articles, you should find some recipes that also use cauliflower instead of
potatoes and chicken for lower calories.
