If you do a lot of traveling and experience jet lag, what do you do to
prevent it? Drink more water. Take melatonin. Drink a caffeinated beverage
or stare into sunlight.

Well, if none of these things work, you may want to try the grocery store cure.
The grocery store cure?
Try eating carbs. A carb like pasta, rice or potatoes.

It’s no secret that traveling across time zones to visit family or friends
can trigger irritability and insomnia by throwing your body clock out of sync.
Now researchers have discovered a delicious and low-cost way to fix it-
eating carb-rich meals of pasta, potatoes or rice two hours before going
to bed at your destination.

How does a carb work to beat jet lag?
The surge in insulin set off by carbs tricks your sleep/wake body clock
into thinking it’s your usual dinnertime. The result: Your body prepares for
sleep, ensuring you feel drowsy in about 2 hours.

So, don’t feel guilty about having that plate of pasta or loaded bake
potato, remember- you’re doing it to beat jet lag.
And if weight is a concern, reduce some of the starch in these foods
by cooking them, letting them cool, refrigerating them and reheating
them the next day.

And lastly, for those who have sworn off carbs, you may want to go the
supplement route. The supplement: Pine bark aka Pycnogenol. Take 3
times daily for seven days, beginning two days before you fly-it cuts jet
lag symptoms by 60%, and it also boosts circulation, and reduces fluid
buildup, which are keys to relieving jet lag related discomfort.
Recommended dose: 50 mg. three times daily
Talk to your health-care provider before adding any type of supplement to
your daily regimen.
