Winter will soon be here, and for a lot of us, that means colds and flu,
but if it doesn’t have to be, how, you ask; by following the simple tips listed
below, which will help you get through this Winter unscathed.

Tip No. 1-
Rinse Your-
Nose. You may have seen nasal rinsing on Dr. Oz. or the popular show
“The Doctors” but if you haven’t, it’s simply spritzing your nasal passages
with saline. Doing this can reduce your odds of getting a cold as well as the
number of colds you get each year. The cold virus has to attach to a cell before
it can replicate and one of the first places it does so is in the nose. Rinsing
the area where viruses try to attach works a lot like hand-washing but
in your nasal tissues. To do this at home, just look for a saline spray
at your local drugstore (CVS or Walgreens) and spritz your nasal passages
a few times a week. It’s also smart to do it after being out in the public.

2) Hum Along-
You may do this when you aren’t sure of the words on the radio or
when you’re busy doing chores or paperwork, it doesn’t matter,
just keep doing it, why? Researchers say it can protect against
catching colds and flu. An antiviral substance known as nitric oxide
is produced in the nasal tissues, and humming is one of the best
ways to increase nitric oxide, so try and hum for a few minutes each day.
Another tip: With Christmas less than 3 months away, start humming some
of your favorite Christmas songs.

3) Check The Indoor Air-
Another way to stay healthy this winter: Keep the air in your home at
40-60%. This is considered the “sweet spot” and it can foil viral invaders
in two ways: It boosts activity of cilia, (tiny hairlike structures that help
expel viruses from the lungs) by up to 175%. Plus, it prevents viruses
from hanging in the air longer than in dry conditions. To get the humidity
in your at the 40-60% level and restore moisture, fill your slow cooker
with water and some orange peels and turn on low for a few hours each
day.

4) Gargle-
Your mom or grand-mom may have advised you to gargle each day,
and thanks to new research, they were right. Gargling each day
for 30 seconds neutralizes more than 90% of germs, plus it
destroys bacteria that causes gum disease. And more good
news: keeping gums healthy also keeps out bacteria that can
cause a host of health problems, like heart disease.
Researchers recommend a rinse like Colgate Plax Mouthwash,
but you can also use warm water or a little salt water.

5) Eat Some Pasta-
Eating pasta doesn’t seem like it’s a healthy way to beat colds and flu,
but it isn’t really the pasta, it’s what you add to the pasta and that’s
garlic. Add garlic to stir-fries, spaghetti sauce or baked salmon
and cut your risk of viral infections by 55%.
So, if you’re a fan of pasta and garlic, here’s a recipe for you.
The recipe: Garlic-Infused Chicken Pasta!
Ingredients:
16 oz. of cooked pasta, ziti or penne
2 Tbs. of olive oil
2 cups of chicken, Cooked
1 bunch of kale, chopped
3 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
2 tsp. of red pepper flakes or 1 tsp. of cayenne pepper
Grated Parmesan or Romano
To make:
Cook pasta the day before and refrigerate or cook a few minutes
before and save 1 cup of the pasta water.
In a skillet, heat the oil and add the other ingredients and the pasta water,
over medium heat. Cook, stirring, until thick and kale is
wilted, about 8 to 10 minutes. Sprinkle on some cheese and serve.
Enough for 4 servings.
