Winter-Proof Your Waistline This Winter!

People love to talk about the “Freshmen 15 or 20” (the amount of weight you’ll gain
as a freshmen in college) but no one really talks about the 5,10 or even 15 pounds
some of us gain during the Winter months.

Well, that’s about to change, listed below are some simple things you can do to avoid
being the victim of an expanded Winter waistline.

a) Drink The Caliente Drink-
Caliente is hot in Spanish and if you’re a fan of hot foods, then add some cayenne
pepper to stir-fried dishes, eggs and bacon or even to a mug of hot chocolate.
Why? Cayenne pepper increases metabolism.
And if you really want to increase metabolism, make Mexican hot chocolate.
To make: Add top quality hot cocoa, cinnamon, and 1/4 tsp. of cayenne pepper
to a mug of very warm skim or low-fat milk, stir and sip slowly.
The calcium in the milk, blood-sugar stabilizing cinnamon, compounds in hot pepper
and antioxidants in cocoa, all work together to rev up your metabolism.

b) Stand Back and Watch–
Simply put, if you plan on going to a party, get-together or buffet-style restaurant,
stand to the side and look over the food being served.
Before filling your plate, give each food a ranking of one to ten, according to how
much you like each food. Then go back and fill your plate only with tens.
Sticking to foods you love ups your satisfaction, so you’re less likely to want
seconds and thirds.

c) Eat More Protein-
You may enjoy beef, chicken and eggs, but unfortunately, these foods
are usually hidden in pasta dishes, covered with gravy and used to make
rich and decadent desserts.
So, have a burger, some chicken breasts or boiled eggs on their own, or
with green veggies and a salad. And to give them more of a fat-burning effect,
add some cayenne or chile pepper to them.

d) Take A Multivitamin-
Many people know that vitamin D is important during the dark and sunlight-shortened
months of Dec. Jan. and Feb. but you also need some C, which lowers the stress levels,
the type of stress that sends many of us back to the refrigerator or kitchen cupboards.
Ask your Dr. to recommend a top quality multivitamin.
Also eat more oranges, clementines, grapefruit, lemons, limes and blood oranges during
the winter months.

e) Eat Some Chili-
Need a reason to break out the crockpot or slow-cooker? How about using it
to make chili. Fill that crockpot with grass-fed beef, or ground turkey, tomatoes,
beans, (kidney or cannellini) and some spices, (turmeric, cayenne pepper and onion powder).
Beans are full of fiber that will keep you satisfied for longer and turkey, is a lean, heart-friendly
protein. After the chili is done, pour into a bowl and top with plain Greek yogurt, (for more
protein) along with a salad and gluten-free crackers or bread.

f) Have a Smoothie-
If cravings get the best of you and you try fasting or avoiding food to control them,
it won’t work. What will work? A smoothie that has some greens, berries, chickpeas,
(or oats) coconut water or green tea and some plain Greek yogurt in it.
Smoothies, especially in the mornings, help fill you up for hours, helping you avoid
those cravings for cookies, brownies, candy and other sweet treats.
Make one in the evening, refrigerate it and drink it in the morning.
