If you plan on having a cocktail (or two) this St. Paddy’s
day, make sure to avoid the whiskeys and vodkas.

Why?
They’re grain-based and if you’re worried about getting
into your swimsuit (speedos or bikini) this Summer,
then you may want to choose something else.

What is the alternative, you ask?
There’s tequila, brandy and vodka made with
potatoes and if you’re going shopping this week,
add the following ingredients to your list.

a) The Martini-
Use Brandy to make a tasty martini this March 17.
Brandy is distilled from fruit juice instead of grains.
To make:
In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine 2 oz. apple
brandy, 1 oz. vermouth and 1/2 tsp. lemon juice.
Shake well; strain into cocktail glass. Tint with
green food coloring. Garnish with an apple slice
for a more festive look.

b) The Margarita-
Popular in the Summer, this drink is made from agave-cactus,
tequila and is a great alternative to grain alcohols.
To make:
Get out the blender, and puree 1 cup of kale (cleaned and the stems
removed), 1 cup of frozen pineapple, 1/4 cup lime juice, 1/4 cup
agave nectar and 2 Tbs. agave nectar.
Enough for two servings.

c) The Bloody Mary-
This is a popular beverage that’s usually served during Brunch,
but today-it’s getting revamped for St. Paddy’s day.
Use a potato vodka* (yes-potatoes are grain-free) and
enjoy it with corned beef and cabbage.
To make:
Use your blender again, and puree 2 yellow tomatoes,
2 tomatillos, 2 stalks of celery, 1 tsp. prepared horseradish,
1/2 tsp. cumin, the juice of 1 lime, a small handful of cilantro
and salt and pepper to taste.
Pour 2 oz. of potato vodka into 2 glasses. Top with the Bloody
Mary mixture. Garnish with a cherry tomato or slice of lime.

* That’s it, and if you have trouble locating potato vodka,
you may have to go to a large package store or wine shop.
Or ask a bartender or someone who works in a
package store if they can order you a bottle or two.
