If losing weight was your New Year’s resolution and you’re sticking
to it, here are some great alternatives for those who want a sandwich
or burger but not the bread (buns).

These healthy swaps will allow you to enjoy that ham and cheese,
that burger or Sloppy Joe without the stomach-bloating effects
of grains.

So, when making out this week’s grocery list, make sure to
include the following ingredients for your own grain-free
sandwich alternatives.

a) Alternative To A Wrap-
Yes, lettuce can be used as a wrap, but let’s face it, it (lettuce)
can’t hold a burger or taco ingredients, but a a large collard
green can.
These large and sturdy greens are standard fare in the South and
African-American community and today, they’re being used as
a healthy alternative to the tortilla or lettuce wrap.
To make it (the green) more tender- just blanch it
for 30 to 40 seconds in water (salted water, if you prefer),
then transfer it to an ice bath. And if you want to
add more flavor, you can place the leaf (leaves) in
a skillet with a Tbs. of olive oil and heat for a minute
or two, (both sides).
After that, just place the green on a large plate and fill
with some ham, cheese, black pepper and diced tomatoes,
or use it to make a taco, hamburger, lettuce, diced tomatoes,
cheese, and cut up avocado.
b) Alternative To A Slider-
Even though the bun for a slider is quite small, many people
eat 2, 3 and sometimes 5 at one time. If weight loss is your
goal, then you may want to use a whole tomato.
Yup, a tomato. Slice off the top (the core) and then slice
in half horizontally, gently squeeze the seeds and juice
out of eat half. After that, just place a small burger
(and all of the fixings) between the buns.
c) Alternative To A Sub-
Subs are quite popular, and if you ditched them because of calories,
it’s time to bring them back using the healthier alternative.
What is it?
A Cucumber. That’s right-the fruit you use to dress up a salad
or place under your eyes (to reduce the puffiness) is now
a great stand-in for the carb-heavy grinder roll.
To make your own home version of the Subway Sub, just
slice a medium-sized cucumber in half lengthwise and use a
melon baller to scoop out the seeds and flesh. After doing
that, go ahead and fill it with sliced roast beef or ham and cheese,
or tuna and mayo or meatballs.
