There will be plenty of pumpkins (both fresh and canned) in the next few
months, so make sure to stock up. And if you’re not sure how to use
them, don’t worry, we’ll help you out, listed below are 10 brilliant uses for
leftover fresh or canned pumpkins.

1) A Candle Holder-
After scooping out a fresh pumpkin to use as a Jack O’ Lantern, hold
onto it and use it as a candle holder. Put the candle inside and light it,
the pumpkin should stand up on its own.
2) Cure Your Best Friend-
If you bring your dog along on road trips and he or she gets an upset
stomach, grab some pumpkin. To make: Mix 1/4 cup of pumpkin (canned),
1 cup of oats, 1/4 cup of water and 1/4 tsp. of ground ginger; form into
small balls (1 1/2″ in diameter) for small dogs and (1″ in diameter) for larger
dogs. Refrigerate the leftovers. Feed to your dog 30 minutes before a trip.
The pumpkin and ginger will help settle the stomach.
3) Help For Aging Hands-
If brown spots are causing concern and embarrassment and you don’t want to
go the surgical route, try the Halloween Rx known as a pumpkin.
To make an at home solution, do the following…
Combine 1 Tbs. of pumpkin puree (canned) and 1 Tbs. of plain yogurt, dab onto
the unsightly brown spots. Acids in the pumpkin break down discolored
skin cells to reveal new skin, plus it’s vitamin C helps brighten and the yogurt
gently exfoliates for glowing results.
4) Ice Chest-
Plan on having guests over for Halloween? Use a carved out pumpkin as an
Ice chest. Set the pumpkin on a table, put a plastic bowl inside, add a few bottles
and cans and some Ice. After the party, just set the pumpkin (Jack O’ Lantern)
back on the front doorstep.
5) Fertilizer-
Toss that old pumpkin into your vegetable or flower garden. Simply chop
it into small pieces, dig shallow holes in the garden soil and add the pumpkin.
Then cover the holes again. As the pumpkin breaks down, it will provide
nutrients that will benefit your plants.
6) Air Fresheners-
Need to freshen up your home? Don’t buy air fresheners that may impair
breathing and cause problems later on, use pumpkins. To make a natural
air freshener, rub your favorite spice (cinnamon or nutmeg) on the inside
of a carved pumpkin, then place a tea light in the bottom of the pumpkin.
When you light the pumpkin, it will infuse your home with a fresh fragrance.
7) Entice Wildlife-
Want more birds to visit your backyard?
Remove the seeds from a pumpkin and spread them around the backyard.
The seeds provide energy-boosting nutrients.
8) Lower Anxiety Levels-
Don’t throw away the seeds? Remove them, rinse them off, dry them and bake
them on low for a few minutes. Eating a handful each day can help lower
heart rates and reduce anxiety levels. The seeds contain tryptophan, an
amino acid that the body converts into the feel-good brain chemical
serotonin, warding off stress and anxiety. Don’t want to clean
and bake fresh seeds? Just head to the supermarket and buy a bag.
9) Homemade Entertainment-
Need something to keep the kids busy and entertained?
Hold onto that old pumpkin. Cut the top off, then loosen the seeds and flesh,
leaving them inside. Next, mix 1/2 cup of warm water and 1/2 cup of white
washable glue (use Elmer’s) in a separate bowl. Pour 1/4 cup of liquid
starch into the pumpkin, followed by the glue mixture. The kids will have
a great time playing with the gooey slime right inside the pumpkin.
Important tip: Since this can cause quite a mess, it’s best to bring this
outside or in the basement. This will make cleanup a lot easier.
10) Stop The Itchiness-
Does your scalp get itchy in the fall and winter? Use some pumpkin to
soothe a flaky and irritated scalp. Mix 1/2 cup of pumpkin (canned) with
2 Tbs. of brown sugar. Rub onto damp scalp for 2 mins., leave on for
a few mins. and then rinse with warm water.
The pumpkin’s alpha hydroxy acids slough off dead skin and promotes new
growth, while the sugar exfoliates, reducing inflammation and white flakes.
